Throwback Thursday! W&M vs. UVA Football (2009)

On September 5, 2009, William & Mary Tribe took on in its in-state “rivals” (perhaps, academically?), the Virginia Cavaliers. The 2009 Tribe team consisted of several greats, which include but are not limited to: RB Jonathan Grimes, CB B.W. Webb, and QB R.J. Archer–all three of which are currently on NFL rosters (Grimes with the Texans, Webb with the Steelers, and Archer with the Seahawks).

Halftime saw the Tribe down 13-14. The Green and Gold would rally to outscore UVA 13-0 in the second half, finishing with a 26-14 victory. R.J. Archer finished 23 of 44 for 184 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Jonathan Grimes tallied 19 carries for 46 yards. And WR Ryan Moody finished with 3 receptions for 70 yards. Kicker Brian Pate also attempted an insane 7 field goals, connecting on 4 out of 7 tries.

On the other end, UVA played all three of the quarterbacks, who combined, finished with 137 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. The Cavaliers’ leading rusher was one of their quarterbacks, Vic Hall, who finished with 8 carries and 54 yards on the ground. The Tribe forced an insane 7 total turnovers, while only committing 1 in the effort.

The big star of this game, however, was B.W. Webb. This truly was his coming out party, as Webb tallied THREE monster interceptions in the contest–one of which was returned for 50 yards and a TD with just 2:39 remaining in the game. The pick six sealed the deal, and ensured the Tribe a victory over the Hoos. As mentioned, Webb has since gone on to pursue his NFL dreams; he currently resides with Mike Tomlin (’95) as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

W&M would go on to do some big things that season, finishing the year 11-3, 6-2 CAA, while UVA brought up the rear, finishing a somewhat horrendous 3-9, 2-6 ACC. Enjoy the trip down memory lane, Tribe fans, and get ready to make the trip to Charlottesville this year as William & Mary takes on UVA on Saturday, September 19! LET’S GO TRIBE!!!
