On Friday May 6, 2022, a group of investors including William and Mary alum Todd Boehly purchased Chelsea, the world-renowned, English Premier League soccer team. The deal was finalized for $5.2 billion. The new owners agreed to not sell the club for 10 years, placing Todd Boehly on the main stage of the English Premier League for years to come. This is huge news, as it vaults WIlliam and Mary onto the world’s biggest soccer stages. Boehly is an incredibly involved alumnus, and most recently spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kaplan Arena renovations. Let’s get to know Boehly a little more.
Todd Boehly is a major sports figure in Los Angeles athletics, as he owns shares of the Dodgers, Sparks, and Lakers. This is the biggest market in American sports and Boehly is at the heart of it all. But before he rose to prominence in the LA sports world, Todd Boehly was a student at William and Mary, where he graduated with a finance degree in 1996. It was here where he and his wife Katie founded the Boehly Center for Excellence in Finance in 2014. According to its website, the Boehly Center “provides opportunities for advanced financial training, career exploration, networking, and experiential learning through financial firm-sponsored competitions as well as through industry-leader and dedicated faculty-taught courses.” Katie and Todd have been instrumental in funding various initiatives at the College, and even contributed to the Kaplan Arena renovations. They also are key contributors to Finding a Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures (FACES) and the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
Currently, Boehly is the founder and CEO of Eldridge Industries, an investment company headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut. Boehly founded the company in 2015 and Eldridge partnered with William and Mary in January 2021 in the development of fiscal policy courses in the world-renowned Mason School of Business. Boehly also partially owns DraftKings, the popular sports betting company that is growing exponentially.
It may be a slower time for William and Mary athletics, with the semester quickly coming to a close, but we here at the Blog promise to keep you up to date on all the top stories from Tribe Athletics in the coming months. Until next time, LET’S GO TRIBE.
