Tribe Defeats Top-Ranked Northeastern

William & Mary basketball, in front of a raucous crowd of over 5,000 fans, defeated the #1 CAA-ranked Northeastern Huskies by a score of 78-62. W&M held the lead the entire game and never let up. The Tribe remains UNDEFEATED at home, with an insane home record of 9-0.

The “Gold Rush” game was a huge success, with everyone rocking their W&M gold as the team donned their new uniforms–which look awesome, might we add. Sean Sheldon finished with a career high 15 points, Omar Prewitt dropped a hefty 19 points, Terry Tarpey also contributed 15, and Marcus Thornton scored 13.

In a somewhat surprising move, Head Coach Tony Shaver heavily called on Senior Tom Schalk tonight. Instead of Jack Whitman filling in for Sheldon off the bench, it was Schalk who saw playing time on the court. Schalk played incredibly well, showed some great awareness and poise on the offensive end, and finished with 4 points and one assist. We hope to see more of him in the coming games.

Another great performance off the bench came by way of Freshman Oliver Tot. On two consecutive offensive possessions in the second half, Tot jacked up and converted on a three point shot; one the very next possession, Tot completed a put back dunk to extend the Tribe’s lead over the Huskies. Known mostly as a highly skilled passer at this stage in his young career, it was awesome to watch Tot excel in other aspects of his game.

Marcus was held relatively quiet for the second game in a row–but with so many players stepping up around him, we were fine with the way the game unfolded. For those of you that weren’t able to attend or watch the game on NBCSN, it was one for the ages. The student section was completely packed and spilled into the vast majority of the upper stands. The Tribe fed off of this energy the entire game, and it without a doubt contributed to the win. Be sure to check out the gallery below.

This win sets up a huge matchup against Hofstra this Wednesday. The Tribe currently sits tied atop the CAA with the win over Northeastern (but hold the tie breakers over Northeastern and UNCW), and will look to protect their #1 rank against a very solid Hofstra team on Wednesday. LET’S GO TRIBE!!!
