W&M’s second CAA matchup of the year culminated in a tough 3-0 loss at Towson. Coming off of a 1-0 win over the College of Charleston last Sunday, W&M (3-6)  was looking for another away win, but the ninety degree heat and a trio of late game goals from Towson (6-3-2) gave the Tigers the victory.

Early pressure and strong tackles from midfielders Kenna Zier and Jillian O’Toole put the Tribe on the front foot.

A shot from Elaina Longjohn in the 12th minute was a promising attempt but was ultimately snuffed by Towson goalkeeper Riley Melendez.

Great defensive work from attackers Hannah Potter and Longjohn kept Towson at bay until the 23rd minute.

A header from the Tigers’ Jasmine Hadid deflected off of the post, undoubtedly Towson’s best opportunity of the half.

Towson followed up in the 26th minute with another shot that went just wide of the far post.

Despite a series of attacks from the Tigers, the Tribe remained in control but neither team was able to make its mark on the half with a goal.

W&M’s defense finished off the first half strong, preventing a 40th minute goal from the Tigers leading to a scoreless first half.

As the second half kicked off, the Tribe continued to dictate tempo both offensively and defensively. A great save from goalkeeper Grace Lemley blocked the Tigers from an early second half goal.

Towson began to take some chances offensively in the 60th minute when forward Nia Christopher took a threatening shot on goal that sailed over the crossbar. The Tribe responded just seconds later with a shot from Longjohn that was unfortuantely deflected into the hands of Towson’s Melendez.

A great ball in by Potter in the 71st minute volleyed by Caroline Monahan was an artful attempt on goal that just skimmed the post, denying the Tribe a goal.

Seven minutes later, Towson’s Christopher registered her first goal of the game to put the Tigers up 1-0. Christopher added to her tally for a brace in the 80th minute to make it 2-0. Towson’s Khori Banks made it 3-0 in the 87th minute, slotting the ball into the far post.

A promising shot from Zier in the 88th minute was swatted away by Melendez, ending the match at 3-0.

Despite the loss, the Tribe had plenty more opportunities than the 3-0 scoreline would suggest.

Next up: the Tribe will face off against UNCW (6-1-1) at home on Thursday, October 7th at 7PM.
